Blood Pressure Study Connector for Kaiser Permanente

Overview

Kaiser, the largest not-for-profit health care plan in the U.S, had an internal research group who were performing a blood pressure study across a variety of patients in different locations. The research group needed to get blood pressure readings from participants without requiring them to come into Kaiser offices.

Challenge

The Kaiser research group decided to provide patients with HealthVault-compatible Omron take-home blood pressure machines. Kaiser needed to be able to download this information from Microsoft HealthVault into their custom desktop-based research application however, they did not have the time for their internal staff to get up to speed on HealthVault and build the solution internally.

Solution

Get Real Consulting developed a Direct-to-Clinical HealthVault application to enroll and manage study participants and download patient blood pressure information. This application enabled the Kaiser team to monitor and manage the study participant’s blood pressure remotely, eliminating the need for them to visit the research office repeatedly throughout the study.

Benefits

Getting patient blood pressure readings from a take-home device via HealthVault provides the study with better data at a lower cost. It also illustrates that the user of at-home blood pressure monitors and web-based reporting tools that connect clinicians and patients via the HealthVault appears to significantly improve patients’ ability to manage their high blood pressure to healthy levels.

Relevance

This demonstrates Get Real Consulting’s ability to develop custom HealthVault connectors for existing applications very quickly and cost-effectively.
